MENTAL TOUGHNESS
By Emmanuel Manolakakis
“The most important attribute a player must have is mental toughness”
Mia Hamm
“Competitive toughness is an acquired skill and not and inherited gift.”
Chris Evertt
Competitive
A competitor will find a way to win. Competitors take bad breaks and use them to drive themselves just that much harder. Quitters take bad breaks and use them as reasons to give up.
Confidence
A ‘can-do’ attitude - a belief you can handle whatever comes your way. Don’t fall victim to self-defeating thoughts.
Control
Successful warriors are able to control their emotions and behaviors. The hallmark of a mentally tough fighter is the ability to maintain poise, concentration, and emotional control under the greatest pressure and the most challenging situations.
Committed
Focus on your goals and dreams. Be self-directed and highly motivated.
Composure
Mentally tough fighters know how to stay focused and deal with adversity. How you manage your emotions can determine whether you win or lose. Firefighters have a great motto: ‘Keep your cool when the heat is on’.
Courage
A mentally tough athlete must be willing to take a risk. It takes courage to grow up and to achieve your full potential.
Consistency
Mentally tough athletes possess inner strength. They often play their best when they’re feeling their worst. They don’t make excuses.
Fights are won or lost in the six-inch space between the ears. Practice the seven C’s of mental toughness.
